Hosted by Guido Romeo, journalist and author specialized in digital economy and innovation, we will kick off the day with Francesco Caio, President of Saipem, an expert in digitization for public and private enterprises. Marco Varone, President and CTO of Expert System, and Mike Gualtieri, VP & Principal Analyst of Forrester Research, will discuss the current state of AI, from promises vs. realities, to state-of-the-art advances and future scenarios.

Unipol, illimity and the Emilia Romagna Region are among the companies who will join us to share their extensive experience in this area.

Chairman of Saipem Group

Francesco Caio is Chairman of Saipem Group and Member of the Board of BNL Group BNP Paribas. He was Economic Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister on industrial policy, CEO and Managing Director of Poste ltaliane where he led the privatization process with the largest European IPO of 2015. Before that he was CEO of Avio (jet engine technologies), Omnitel (today Vodafone Italy), Olivetti, Merloni Elettrodomestici lndesit & Ariston domestic appliances), Netscalibur, Cable & Wirelles. He also has experience in investment banking where he was Chairman of the European Advisory Board of Lehman and Vice Chairman of Nomura in London. As non executive director he has served on various Boards including Motorola, Equant, Invensys. He advised the UK and Italian governments on national broadband plans and was Commissioner for the Digital Agenda in the Italian Cabinet. He is member of the Advisory Board of Politecnico di Milan where he graduated in Computer science. He has an MBA from lnsead.


VP, Principal Analyst Serving Application Development & Delivery Professionals, Forrester

Mike’s research focuses on software technologies, platforms, and practices that enable technology professionals to deliver digital transformations that lead to prescient digital experiences and breakthrough operational efficiency. Mike is also a leading expert on the intersection of business strategy, artificial intelligence, and innovation. Mike has more than 25 years of experience in the industry helping design and develop mission-critical applications in eCommerce, insurance, banking, travel/hospitality, manufacturing, healthcare, and technology for organizations including NASA, eBay, Bank of America, Liberty Mutual, Nielsen, EMC, and many others. His background is that of a practitioner, having written thousands of lines of code, managed development teams, and architected complex systems of applications. Mike earned a B.S. in computer science and management from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. While a student, Mike was awarded three US patents for inventing an expert system used to train air traffic controllers around the world.



Director General for Resources (human and financial), Europe, Innovation and Institutions, Emilia-Romagna Region

Francesco Raphael Frieri is the Director General for Resources (human and financial), Europe, Innovation and Institutions of the Emilia-Romagna region and supports the administrative function of the region at the Conference of Regions and at the headquarters in Brussels.
Previously, he was Director General of the Union of Municipalities of Lower Romagna and also a teacher and trainer for several important Italian universities and research centers.
He has published numerous articles and essays in journals and economic newspapers, and authored a manual on the Unions of Municipalities in 2012 in collaboration with other colleagues.
In the 2000s, he served as the Deputy Mayor with a delegate to the Budget and Citizens’ Participation for the City Council of Modena, and as the National Head of Local Finance for the Local Autonomy League.
He holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Bologna and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Bologna Business School.



Group CIO, Unipol

A graduate in Electronic Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, he began his professional career at the Digital Equipment Corporation in an international consulting team dedicated to the design of intensive transaction processing architectures for the financial market.
He joined Ced Borsa in 1990 where he was responsible for the design and development of an automated trading system for the Italian Stock Market and for the provision of related services.
He joined A.N.I.A. in 1998 where he served as CIO and General Manager of CID, the Italian Consortium for Direct Claims Compensation where he led the implementation of the new direct indemnity system for the Italian auto insurance market.
He has served as Group CIO at Unipol since May 2007.



Head of Direct Banking and Chief Digital Operations Officer, illimity

A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano University, specialised in engineering management. His managerial career has been focused on transformation, beginning at multinational entities such as DHL and Vodafone, which he contributed to transforming from an Italian company to a multinational telecom entity.
He joined the BPM Group in 2000 managing the Bank’s digital transformation process. Then he went on to revamp WeBank completely into a remote model, until making it a benchmark for the sector and taking over the role of General Manager. After leaving the lending industry, he took on the position of General Manager in CSE Consulting, an IT and back-office services outsourcing company offering digital turnaround services to small and medium sized banks.
He joined the illimity team to manage the Direct Banking and Digital Operations Division, bringing along his over 20-years’ experience in digital transformation.



President and CTO, Expert System

Marco, founder, president and CTO of Expert System, is one of the leading experts on semantic technology and natural language processing. He created the Cogito platform, which is the basis of all Expert System’s products. He has worked in the field application of semantic technology in every advanced context: search engines, text analytics, natural language interfaces, Q & A systems, automatic categorization and many others. He has led the company throughout its consistent growth and has helped Expert Systems to achieve major successes in various business sectors. He coordinates all activities of Research and Development and in his spare time, he writes about these issues on the company blog and his own blog, Semanticamente.



CEO, Expert System

For many years now, Stefano has led Expert System as CEO. His guidance has led the company to achieve a leading position, receive prestigious international awards, and establish itself among the top ICT companies in the world in the field of information management. He founded this company with the idea to develop software to support other companies with the analysis of information. Through the years, he has always carried out this idea with great passion and determination. Recently, Stefano successfully managed Expert System’s IPO and the company’s internationalization process. Stefano holds an EMBA from the Alma Graduate School of the University of Bologna, as well as a degree in Computer Science from the University of Modena, Italy.



Data & Business Journalist

Guido Romeo is an award winning data and business journalist. He writes for Il Sole 24Ore, and is co-founder and President of FACTA. He has been Editor in chief of Atomium–EISMD’s REIsearch project and Communications director of AI4People. He co-founded and chaired until 2017 Diritto Di Sapere, one of the NGOs instrumental in the approval of the first italian freedom of information act in 2016. He graduated from the University of Bologna and holds a journalism degree from the Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme in Lille, France and a masters in communications.
